Dear Gordon:

A common misconception on the original "Dragnet" was that Jack Webb actually said "just the facts" or "just the facts ma'am/sir." This is not true at all. However, Ed O'Neill as Detective Joe Friday of the Los Angeles Police Department has a rather frazzled senior citizen come up to him whose grandson is missing. So the Sarge calms her down to focus so he can hear the pertinent aspects of the case when asking her for details.

"Just the facts ma'am."

This Seems Rather Factual & Matter Of Fact Joe,

Rory

"The 'Just the facts, ma'am' phrase appears in the parody St. George and the Dragonet, a 1953 short audio satire by Stan Freberg." -- Wikipedia, "Dragnet"
