Dear Gordon:

An Editor's Note: As we mourn President John Kennedy, murdered in Dallas, Texas so viciously LI (51) years ago today, perhaps it is fitting that Executive Dissertations takes a look at another assassinated President this afternoon, President James Garfield.

Just the IInd President to be slaughtered while in office, President Garfield only lasted CC (200) days in power & died LXXX (80) days after being shot. As a result of this, the powers of the Vice-President Chester Alan Arthur, Republican-New York to be "Acting" President with a still living Commander-In-Chief/Chief Executive were sort of in doubt. This of course was b/c people wanted to give President Garfield a chance to do something even though his wounds were mortal & so a government agenda couldn't really move forward until his death b/c any orders given by Pres. Garfield might be countermanded through channels by Vice-President Arthur and vice versa. Although while in office, Pres. Garfield did discuss the need for education & how it would maintain a sense of order & good governance from the student leaders (including Presidents) of the future.

"Next in importance to freedom & justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained."

March IVth-September XIXth, MDCCCLXXXI (1881),

Rory
