October VIth, MMXIV

Hon. Gordon Dirks, B. Ed., M. Ed.
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Calgary-Elbow Byelection Candidate As Unelected

Dear Gordon:

Thought of as a true political outsider, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, MP didn't even campaign for her federal seat during the MMXI election & even went to Las Vegas during the writ for a pre-planned vacation. Yet strangely enough, she won & has turned out to be one of the finest assets the New Democratic Party has & is now it National Vice-Chair she is so adept at the game. Not bad for a Ist (1st) termer I'd say. Ruth Ellen was a barmaid of all things & a single working mother so her background is in the hospitality & hard work of raising a child alone. Two things that definitely are an asset b/c in parliament, you must have a mix of folks from both academia & non-academia area to come up with bills & ideas in order to make better compromises & thereIV come up with legislation that is good for families of all stripes. Ruth Ellen discusses the stresses of a lack of education but having to have "street smarts" in order II raise her son alone. A situation faced by many single mothers & fathers the world over.

"I had my son very young, so I didn't have the traditional high school most people would have. When you go at it alone, you need a good support system & I've been very lucky to have my parents there since Day 1."

Number XLIX (49),

Rory
