Dear Thomas:

Providing a student(s) with a proper foundation & good moral attitude is important. Its not just that they should try & be upstanding citizens IV themselves once they complete their chosen educational path. They should try & do good IV the common man, take what they've learned in a classroom setting & apply it to real life in doing things IV those less fortunate & the betterment of humanity as a whole.

April XXVIIth, MMXII

Hon. Thomas Lukaszuk, MLA-Elect, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Castledowns

Dear Thomas:

At a teen house party, a young man gets stabbed to death right in the heart with a steak knife deliberately thrown at him. The assailant was XVIII (18) at the time of the crime & is now XXI (21). So in otherwords he's an adult who understood the consequences of his actions. Now all he gets is III (3) years in jail IV manslaughter. To me, this is a case of full on pre-meditation in terms of what he was going II do. Manslaughter, IInd Degree Murder, Ist Degree Murder, this student took the life of a fine young man whose only crime was being at the house party & trying II stop inappropriate behavior! I believe XXV (25) to life would have much more appropriate b/c in 1,091 days when he gets out of jail, the murdered man will still not be back & the parents will have the stress of knowing their son's murderer will be free after such a short time. The assailant had & has no remorse, he flipped his middle finger at the assembled media after the verdict, the murder victim will never get to finish his studies & have a spouse & family or give his parents grandkids!

Dear Thomas:

This recent appearance the other day of a pistol in a Toronto school is frightening II say the least. What with the other shooting of a pane of glass nearby & the XV year old student Jordan Manners in the past, things have certainly gotten out of control. Let us make sure that the students know that guns are not toys, even if they are toy guns or water guns, they should not ever, thats not ever be brought around any school yard in case someone gets hurt.

Dear Thomas:

Now that the election is over, hopefully you or whomever is chosen as Alison's next replacement Education Minister can see the Education Act to fruition. But with compromises of course that are fair II the opposition party's. The bill presented beIV dissolution was quite frankly terrible & needed much work II repair it. In the British school system, they have an effective website on asbestos in schools & fighting it, every step of the way. In Edmonton-Calder we have NDP Candidate David Eggen, a former Calder MLA & now a teacher. Then we have Bev Esslinger, the Progressive Conservative Candidate & a former Edmonton Public School Board Trustee. Two very strong proponents of education.

Battle River-Wainwright Progressive Conservative Candidate & PC Leadership MMXI Candidate, Doug Griffiths, the current Min. of Muni. Affairs is also a teacher. The Alberta Liberals have the retiring MLA IV Edm.-Riverview, Dr. Kevin Taft, a Professor of Business graduate with a Ph. D. from a school in England. Hon. Thomas Lukaszuk, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative Candidate, Edmonton-Castledowns

Dear Thomas:

Just had some whack job in a corvette try & go around a school bus on 87th Avenue, going west at 159th Street. The school bus had its blinkers on & they were clearly flashing to all including me. The corvette went around the bus & scraped up its left side & wound up on a diagonal with its left tires on the centre meridian. There's more damage to the gentleman's corvette than the school bus let me tell you. Folks need II be reminded that school, &/or regular transit drivers put their hazards on IV many reasons including students/pedestrians crossing, hazards/danger ahead, or to signal a lane change. IV the sake of our students & the driver, the corvette owner & other drivers with bad habits should obey basic traffic rules.

Dear Thomas:

Having just worked a 12am-8am night shift at a refrigeration warehouse, I can truly say what a great experience it was. There are both men & women on this shift in terms of labourers & office staff. Whats great is they get along beautifully. If an office staffer has a question of an employee, they come right out II the floor & treat that employee like a human with a face II face encounter. It also works in reverse, if an employee is ticked off, or perhaps confused on something, they can march right inII any managers office IV their query, no questions discounted. This is a truly great symbiotic relationship & cuts the no. of employee accidents by a lot. Plus many of the managers & office staff have gone to business schools IV management &/or marketing training

12PM: Enjoy a student assembly at the Afton Elementary School Gym, with an introductory prayer by Rev. Donald C. Frame, Head Minister, Trinity United Church.

1:30PM: Meet students in gym after school year opening ceremony. Have classroom introductions of staff & students in more intimate, smaller setting. Show kids where things are so they are comfortable. Have the students make a fun project: "apple hats" from construction paper.

2:35PM: Early dismissal so students don't feel too much pressure & are excited about the learning process. Also, mention to kids about the importance of being positive members of the community, or "community helpers."

A place where they can be excited to constantly garner new knowledge about music each & every time they enter the school's front doors. Hon. Thomas Lukaszuk,

Dear Thomas:

Colin F. Smith, the Editor of The Edmonton Senior has once again hit the nail on the head. He's emphasized how important the vote & opinion of seniors is, not just in this election, but in many others as seniors vote in great numbers. Not just that, but they are very conscious of the issues & want to make society better IV themselves, their children, grandkids, great grandkids, & so on.

Students who study the affects of aging & gerontology need II pay attention to Editor Smith's summations of the leadership candidates so that can get the proper perspective on what the true needs of seniors are these days. Of course you all as panelists did a really fine job, but Wildrose Senate Candidate Vitor Marciano outshined you all., As a father of a daughter & a non MLA candidate, Vitor was the perfect choice b/c he could really give thought provoking answers as he will not be in a situation where he is part of either a Wildrose opposition or government. Dear Thomas:

Students need to realize that its a good idea to actually campaign on the ground level IV candidates so they can really see the democratic process in action. Each team says they are good IV volunteers, & yet their websites are asking people to volunteer. Anyone who comes in should definitely be given a task to do so they feel they contributed, however small. Students on the political scene or in Social Studies classes need to see that volunteers (which are harder & harder to come by) need II be given work when they show up.
