Dear David:

Well this is sure exciting David, last night by random chance I found myself two rooms down at the Hotel Macdonald from the XLth (40th) Anniversary of Peter Lougheed seizing power from the Social Credit Party of Alberta. I got to meet & greet some former Lougheed officials & shook hands with Premier's Lougheed & Getty & their gorgeous brides. As the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta starts year XLI (41) of its reign, let us not forget to tell Social Studies & History students to remember the past & take lessons from it on where to go in the future.

Dear David:

Your fellow citizen named David, that is David Staples is right today in the Edmonton Journal today in saying that folks should send their kids to the local neighbourhood school. I like Mr. Staples encouraging attitude, we need to promote local school growth, especially in older areas which w/o kids to fill the schools can fall into urban decay.

By keeping local schools strong, they will not just have a chance to survive, but to outright thrive.

Thanks Mr. Staples,

Dear David:

Not only was Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB) Chairman Dave Colburn behind the initial drive to get rid of junk food in public schools, he lives his own healthy eating mantra by cooking healthy at home. By cooking for the Edmonton Journal food critic, Mrs. Liane Faulder, Dave is opening up the homes of public school students & their family's to a visual display of healthy eating. In this way, students will want to influence their parent/guardian that they want to eat healtheier at home & at school as well.

Dear David:

On CBC News "The National", Ron Charles interviewed two students who were moving from elementary to middle school. Their mom took them on a practice walk II their new school. Even as a parent, the mom was nervous too as its a totally unfamiliar environment IV her daughters. The teacher calmed any bad nerves by mentioning to the girls and Reporter Charles that being nervous the first day or even days is natural IV anyone in a new setting.

When shopping IV school supplies, parents & their children need II sit down & prioritize their lists to see whats most important: as well as where they can cut back on wants in order II get their basic needs met. By working as a team, they'll be less stresses when they go out to stores to price what they need & then work on getting the best possible deals in order to make their hard earned funds go a little farther at the checkouts.

It all comes down II basic science & economics, a school lesson even beIV opening day. learning II save in their formative school years will teach students the value of money & to appreciate what they have: even if its not always the best of the best.

If folks want a "real nice" bit of book learning, they should head on down II the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum in College Station, Texas. A display is running down there from September Ist, MMXI-July XXIXth, MMXII. This exhibit features a title called "Headed II The White House" & is an interactive display of the Presidential primaries & their electoral processes, all the way to & through election night. Of course the next United States Presidential vote will be held on the Ist Tuesday following the first Monday in November MMXII. This is definitely a great place to get democratic questions to the process answered. I mean who better to teach electoral politics than the XLIst President, George Herbert Walker Bush & his staff. Way II go I say to the University of Alberta Physical Education Department. Letting student Gabby Riches do her thesis & research papers on mosh pits, as well as the study of heavy metal music & how it operates is great. Heavy metal music is very taxing physically & its musicians get a great work out b/c they have to constantly be moving when they play and dance while singing. Chairman David Colburn, Vice Chairman Sarah Hoffman, & Conference Chair Mike Janz & the rest of the Board are doing the right thing in excising junk food effective this Wednesday, September Ist. As a person with weight issues & dietary struggles myself I can truly appreciate that the Board is trying to make our kids safer & give them healthy snacks so that they have positive energy levels & caloric intakes. Unfortunately due to a committment II drive an older lady in my mom's building to & from the doctor, I could not participate in the IIIrd Annual Mike Lake, MP Pancake Breakfast which was held yesterday. It was held at Mike's new constituency office parking lot at 9225-28 Avenue NW. Having Aspberger's Syndrome, the high functioning form of autism, I appreciate what Mike & his lovely wife Debi do on this matter in raising funds to try & understand this disorder. There are many who try & make fun of autistic kids & adults instead of getting to know what great people they are & how much they can contribute to society.

Mike & Debi have a son named Jaden who is a low functioning autistic, but man I've got to tell you David, this is one awesome kid. His parents & his sister Jenae love him & nurture him. They realize that he is not just a kid with a handicap, but someone who contributes greatly to society. This breakfast has raised a lot of cash in the past, lets hope it continues to IV The Autism Society of Edmonton in Alberta & The Children's Autism Society. Baby Keira Keryluk is one tough little girl. She was born with liver disease & needed blood to give her energy while a new matching liver was found. This is a great story b/c when little Keira starts going to school, she can tell her classmates how important it is to give blood to Canadian Blood Services & other approved agency's so that lives can be saved. Its not just old people that can get sick & die, baby's & student age kids can die of disorders such as blood cancers as well.

Keira's mommy & daddy (Kristie & Trent) are now lifelong blood donors at their local blood clinic in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They stress the importance of doing this II help others, just as baby Keira was helped. I am just here with my niece trying to instill the values of friendship & caring, as well as being happy & sharing. My niece likes "Dora The Exporer" videos b/c Dora teaches, English, L'Espanol, & other languages to her viewers. Plus, she has lots of human & animal friends to play with, including Boots the Monkey. She talks about responsibility & making sure that students & kids in all parts of the world have a decent chance at a quality education. Ie: adventures include giving out school supplies, building materials to build schools that have been destroyed, etc. The overriding theme being that Dora is trying to get kids of all races, coloors, & creeds to have an equal chance at a good life & a strong beginning educational foundation.

Plus, my niece & I can play word recognition & letter games to ensure she keeps up cognitively over the summer. I am even trying her first language of Chinese. It really is quite fun.

I cannot believe just how much "on fire" CTV New's Lloyd Robertson & "CBC's News Peter Mansbridge are. These two fine gentleman & their broadcast teams are doing a masterful job in saying fairwell to the late New Democratic Leader, Jack Layton. CTV, CBC & other broadcasters are sharing camera feeds to ensure that only the best of the best in terms of camera angles & shots are being shown. Students of journalism need to take note that after October XXVIth, Lloyd Robertson will no longer be the anchor of the "CTV National News", ending a glorious XXXV (35) year run. So we should appreciate his journalistic talents while he is still around.

Peter & Lloyd are friendly tv news competitors, but also great friends. This combining of resources & respect IV eachother & the solemness of the occasion, a state funeral is wonderful. These two journalists & many others broadcasting Mr. Layton's funeral that at a time of rememberance & appreciation of Mr. Layton's talents, there is no need IV bickering or worrying about grabbing News Special ratings. Teaching children to share at a younger age is a very important concept. If a parent teaches say his daughter to share some of her toys at the local playground sandbox, the more likely that the children around her will reciprocate. Sharing & learning the concept of being friendly will teach the child(ren) that s/he/they must learn to share throughout life, they will then be able to make deals with others as they grow into their student years, & eventually as adults in the work force.

Dear David:

As you are aware, Wednesday brought the end of two different styles of leadership here in Alberta. Conservatives said goodbye to Premier Ed Stelmach with a thank you dinner. At the same time, New Democrats said thanks & praise II Jack Layton for his years of service. Praising him II the nines IV standing up IV Canada, even though it cost Jack his very life with his flare up of a new cancer.

Both men weren't the best of leaders or the very worst. The point is, both tried their best to make Canada a better plce to be in their own special way. Jack Layton was so respected that Prime Minister Steve Harper granted him a state funeral, despite him never having made it to office as a Cabinet Minister, let alone as Prime Minister.

Social Studies students remember, these two men thought of Canada first & themselves second. Completely selfless & respectable.

I was just looking at some numbers from North American hospitals on the numbers of surgery's performed on children who were running around with scissors & other sharp objects unsupervised. The amount of damage that can be done, particularly to the face (& eye areas of that face) can be staggering. Yes its important to allow kids to experiment with scissors, this is of course so they learn to use them safely. But in my mind, kids of any age still need to be watched when using them. Unless they are being watched, kids should be allowed II only use child friendly scissors. These child scissors will negate any chance of these students of the future from accidentally causing themselves bodily harm.

Dear David:

Students who study Parliamentary democracy need to be aware of just how valuable the Canadian Senate & our Senators are. They act as an appointed chamber of sober second thought. Members of Parliament have to work with & compromise with Senators. Bills have to pass through both Houses of Parliament three times, as well as Senate & MP's committees & sub-committees. This is where bargains & compromises are then struck. This most certainly makes IV better & more responsive government IV the Dominion of Canada as a whole. Plus all sides, both left & right & those in the centre get a little bit of what they want passed. This of course leads to much better democracy & then future parliamentary leaders that come from those who are students now can learn fronm their predeccessors to make life better IV all.

Dear David:

I was quite impressed upon playing in Abbotsfield Park last night, just immediately NE of Olde Towne Beverly. This area of the city is quite old, but the playground had been fixed up & murals painted on the equipment with bright & friendly colours. A slogan stating "our children are precious" was also clearly visible. At about 7:15pm, a group of adults & their kids walked through the park to make sure that the kids were safe & that their adult handlers were treating them with respect. Sort of a safe kids initiative, I was mightily impressed & mentioned that I lived in the west end. These folks were taking back their neighborhood, which has higher crime levels than some. By being present in early evenings (including on weekends) with random patrols, criminal elements are scared away & the kids & their parents &/or guardians can play out in the sun worry free. Just the way kids should play.

Dear David:

Now here's an expense thats quite justified. The City of Edmonton Parks & Recreation Dept. & other levels of government are going II make its trails accessible IV those who are handicapped &/or slightly incapacitated. I applaud this move as students who are disabled but still want to consider a career in say forestry, botany, horticulture, &/or just want to go have a little bit of exercise can now enjoy these trails. Whereas before their options were limited to indoor exercise facility's. I think this initiative by the governing body's is great b/c students & anyone who is diabled should have the right to participate to their maximum of their physical ability in any exercise program they want, whether indoors or outdoors. This making trails fully accessible will help with people's cognitive function & enjoyment of life as well as folks will be able to view & study the plants, trees, shrubs, & flowers that are along the trail. Not only will they gain knowledge up close in real time, they can make friends with family's who are on the trail at the same time. So their social lives will become much better as well.

Dear David:

Safety in movie theatres & other places is key. I learned a valuable lesson tonight at Cineplex Odeon Theatres North, just off St. Albert Trail. My mother June fell & cut her face open above her eye. The attendants helped her up with me, gave her some Coca-Cola (TM) to stimulate her brain & balance off her blood sugars to cover off her diabetes. They even got cold compresses IV her II hold against her head. Even walking her to the front door so I could get her car & put her inside.

Employees there deserve great kudos, they even gave me medical advice to go to Sturgeon Hospital as it was closer, just north to St. Albert. These Cineplex employees gave me a real education, & that education was just how valuable the health & safety of each & every one of their customers is. By the way, I got my mom safely to the Misericordia Hospital emergency as she feels more comfy there. She's being treated now and told me she was giving her fall "two thumbs down", but the movie (Cowboys & Aliens) "two thumbs up."

Educational columnist Linda White has it right. Teachers & students need to set boundaries. They can be friendly, but a sense of decorum should be maintained. So a student should call his teacher/instructor "Professor or Mrs. Hancock" for instance. If students are adults, then the instructor should respond by saying, "Mr. or Ms. Jackson" for example. By having some formality in the classroom setting, the teachers & students will then learn to respect eachother more in the classroom, & in any future classes they ma have together.

Here's a young lady who has overcome adversity & destruction. Losing her home to fire at Red Creek in May, Shandy Wogan won a MMXI Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program spot. Now she's performing scientific wonders at the University of Alberta this summer. Feeding the science nerd in her cognitive life daily will help Shandy IVget about her troubles & focus on the positive & in rebuilding her life. I see Shandy is excited about all of the modern equipment she is using & how much more she can do with it. This modernesque treatment of science will allow her to do better at her new school, Peace River High School. Her focus this summer is on diabetes & how it relates to Vitamin D.

Her family, friends, & township folks of Red Earth have been supportive emotionally & financially. Her adult research colleagues treat her like a real adult & a real scientist, not just as a student. Talk about the ultimate sign of respect. Let us hope Shandy Wogan has a positive impact in whatever field(s) of science she chooses II practice in IV many years II come.

Some brilliant detective work by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) SE District Major Crime Unit. Truly sad that popular teacher Laura Beckett was actually killed by her husband Peter. Mrs. Beckett lived with her hubby I guess in Westlock, but was a very popular Grades I-III teacher in the hamlet of Dapp. It doesn't matter that Mr. Beckett made efforts to revive his wife, if he killed her, he deserves XXV years to life in jail. Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

A man came inII the Government of Canada Meadowlark Service Centre & was attempting to perform online gambling with a credit card today on the Jobsearch Computers. He was quickly kicked off & rightly so. These computers are IV Job Searches only & sending letters & emails to prosective employers. They should be treated as professional machines IV business & not be abused. One hour per day, person strictly IV jobs. Besides, students need to learn that when job hunting you must always be courteous to others as being unemployed is very stressful. There are always line ups of folks waiting II use the computers IV their own career possibilities. No one should have to wait b/c someone has a gambling disorder or is abusing the computers with some other personal bad habit.

Dear David:

In order to educate children on the value of animals, we need look no farther than our own crown jewel: The Storyland Valley Zoo. From Lucy the Elephant on down, there are many variety's of species of animals IV children to look at & study, as well as to admire. Students coming this summer on tour groups with their family's might just develop an interest in a career in animal welfare or veterinary medicine. That can only be good news IV any future patients, including those animals currently housed at the zoo.

You would not believe the quality of leather school backpacks at The Leather Center Ltd. in Westmount Mall. I purchased one IV $21.99 for the granddaughter of my friend just the other day. But they have backpacks in leather starting at just $9.99, a really great deal.

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

For students who like modernistic & avant garde art, designed of course with a real flare, they should take a tour of the Andy Warhol exhibit called "Warhol: Manufactured" at The Art Gallery of Alberta. This exhibit closes August XXIst, MMXI & so there is only IX more days to see it. The can of "Campbell's" soup picture is only one example of the late Mr. Warhol's talents. He had many students who admired & in some cases imitated his style, which of course flattered him. I strongly recommend students & art lovers visit this exhibit & bring cans of soup IV The Edmonton Food Bank. A tie in to Mr. Warhol's taste in food art & very apprepro.

The Seniors Of Africa

August XIth, MMXI

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Colin F. Smith, the astute Editor/Reporter of The Edmonton Senior writes in his August MMXI issue about the abuse of seniors in Africa & how the drought & war torn conditions. have affected them adversely. Students who might be interested in gerontology or working with seniors in the medical field just must realize how precious seniors are, even ones incapacitated in wheelchairs & bedridden ones. The seniors in Africa & worldwide need II be treated with respect. I for one suggest that DATS buses & transport vehicles with wheelchair ramps that are retired but still in good shape be sent to Africa. They can then be used to cart incapacitated seniors out of the way safely during times when African gangs come in to try & committ murder. Every senior thats already stressed from being malnourished needs to be protected.

Seniority,

Rory

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Here are some wise words on education:

I. "I looked at the fact that education was the jurisdiction of the Province."

- Former Progressive Conservative Premier E. Peter Lougheed on why he entered provincial, as to federal politics. A Harvard MBA graduate & a lawyer.

II. "The family has to be a team, & respect eachother & work together. That builds family loyalty."

- Former Progressive Conservative Premier Donald R. Getty on instilling in students the importance of family values & why he created the Family Day statutory holiday.

III. "Children's services was very important."

- Former Progressive Conservative Premier Ralph P. Klein on the value he places on putting kids first, by creating the Department of Children's Services to help students of all ages get a strong start in life.

IV. "We have committed $35 billion towards infrastructure in the last five years to prepare IV the growth that we know will come. That's a source of pride."

- Current Progressive Conservative Premier Edward M. Stelmach on why he committed so much to infrastructure, including the building of new schools & the repair of older ones.

Dear David:

Having just left palatial downtown Edmonton where I was droppring off a senior to visit her friend at the Edmonton General Hospital Continuing Care Centre, I took a drive over to the Centre High School. Centre High offers academic upgrading, as well as an atmosphere where mature students can get help finishing off their high school in say a little longer time frame due to cognitive difficulty's, &/or say family concerns/work committments. Its a place where students are not judged IV who they are, but are instead allowed to shape themselves inII who they want II be at their own pace.

Dear David:

The "education" wall at the employment office is quite fascinating. Students who want to get educated about careers can not only learn about different job opportunities, they can learn how to land the jobs that interest them. Perhaps even leading to a full time, long term career path. Folks with disability's such as myself can look into short & contract term employment. There definitely is something there IV many different careers.

Dear David:

The Edmonton Folk Music Festival is this weekend. I encourage students of all ages to attend. Its not just entertaining for students who are interested in taking band practice, but for students who appreciate arts in general. Plus there are student performers themselves on the stage, in addition to the professional acts lined up. This collaborative efforts lets all types & purveyors of music to enrich the stage & makes the lives of their fellow performers & the audience in general richer musically. I definitely encourage students who are consider attending & bringing their family's along so that musical excitement is passed onto future generations.

Dear David:

An excellent commentary by Pedro Arrais of the Victoria Times-Colonist today. He's highlighting the mud framed structure built by Ann & Gordon Baird. Its solar panels & efficient use of energy makes them a net supplier of power to the British Columbia electricity grid. In fact, each & every weekday a school bus tour of students come to the home for a look at how to be a responsible citizen of the world. Being friendly to the environment will cause the Baird's to pass on this wisdom to the students, who will then want to build their own environmentally sustainable homes.

Dear David:

Last night on "The National", reporter Curt Petrovich was on the Somali/Kenyan border profiling former Canadian hostage, Ms. Amanda Lindhout. Amanda's captivity lasted XV (15) months, but she has chosen to make a positive out of a negative. In all off the degradation & chaos she saw, Amanda is setting up schools in Somalia & in the border region of Kenya. These schools are ensuring the poorest children have at least half a chance in life to get a decent quality education.

Bully & Bravo IV Amanda,

Dear David:

Yesterday was quite an interesting experience at the west end Home Hardware store. My father & I were watching some carpenters & tradespeople put together the wooden frame for a display. There were students on holiday there picking up building supplies with their parents as well. These students seemed quite riveted by the displays. I told dad that these are the kinds of kids who should take Industrial Education classes in how to work with wood, as well as Forestry component courses when they attend high school. Having these courses will help them tremendously if they decide to become carpenters, cabinet makers, millwrights, or work in some other aspect of the forestry industry.

These gentlemen wore steel toed boots, had safety glasses on, hearing protectors, & eye protection glasses. They did everything by the book & had a crosscut saw, pneumatic nailers, & all the tools you can imagine a craftsman would need. Plus, they kept them all in such immaculate shape. This kind of quality trades worker can make going into trades seem like a really great choice IV future students in the industry.

Bravo Home Hardware,

Camptown Races Sing This Song

Dear David:

Summer Camps are a great way IV kids to burn healthy energy. They are encouraged to bring along a healthy lunch & snacks. They get to do fun exercising activity's such as running around, hiking, & swimming & scavenger hunts. This along with the food keeps their body's healthy & ready to play. Cognitive games to stimulate the brain such as artistry classes like painting, playing with toys & games, making crafts, & just drawing are also included.

So whether through the YMCA or say a Summer School &/or community league, children should be encouraged to attend these camps. Sometimes they even include field trips to off site places in an adventure format. Sometimes the kids stay at the same facility all day doing multiple activity's of learning in a fun way. Which of course means they'll be more excited about attending & want to go back & even tell you about their day. The point is these places let kids be kids & play with similar aged kids in a friendly environment where they can perhaps make new friends & learn new experiences.

Dear David:

As I live near this Service Centre, I brought in a senior citizen today with mobility problems who is about to turn LXV (65.) He's about three months away from doing so & needed assistance in filling out the Old Age Security Entitlement Forms. Service Canada & Service Alberta staff who jointly operate out of this facility are amazing. You & your colleague Minister of Service Alberta Heather Klimchuk are doing a great job. Students who are looking for summer jobs &/or permanent employment should not give up hope, even in this tight economy. There are many jobs all the way from Astronomy-Zoology & everything beforehand & after & in-between.

Dear David:

So Grammy Award (TM) Winner & Music Megastar Snoop Dogg has expanded his Snoop Youth Football League to Chicago, Illinois. Well good for Snoop or Calvin Broadus as thats his real name (as well as the Windy City.) By making up a football league for school aged children, he is teaching them the value of exrcise on the gridiron. He is also promoting team spirit, & respect IV yourself & your fellow players, even if they are say learning &/or physically diabled. Snoop is a loving father & husband. So its out of respect IV his own wife & family that he is this focused on youth & youth entertainment.

I certainly applaud Snoop IV this initiative. Kids need to focus their energies inII positive activity's & to learn about the game of football teaches them the physical & the cognitive or mental skills in learning to run & understand the plays. Its all about strategy & outsmarting your opponent. Its also about just having fun & being kids. Snoop's using his money IV good & thats all right!
