Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,
Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

I was just talking here in the library II some kids from Athlone & Lauderdale Elementary Schools. They are really concerned about the lack of nutrition available in & around their schools IV healthy eating choices. The kids tell me that they are sick of "hot dog days" & would prefer days or themes in the schools where soups, salads, fruits, and vegetables are brought in. Sometimes they do not eat healthy in the mornings, they'll have a bowl of cereal, but its very sugary and of course they'll have no fruit to supplement it. Instead, they'll be given a glass of fruit juice which will have an extremely high level of sugar in it.

What These Kids Say Makes Sense,

August XXXth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA
Minister of Education,

Dear David:

Kids have been telling me here today and at the Londonderry Mall Branch that they would like to see increased lighting in front of stand alone branches. I was here last week and at Kensington Branch two weeks ago campaigning IV Ward A Trustee & I noticed that even in front of a strip mall with a neon sign, the lighting is very poor in library parking lots. A mother & son sitting here at this computer station bank told me they do not like II leave the branch here at Lois Hole when its dark as its quite a dark trip to the parking lot and their vehicle. So I guess you can imagine how stressful it is IV family leaving the parking lot II get to say a bus station walking across a poorly lit grass field. We need increased exterior night time lighting year round IV students & family's (of all ages & backgrounds) at all EPL branches.

Meticulous,

Rory

August XXXth, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA

Dear David:

I would definitely encourage schools in Ward A (& everywhere) to have a room on standby IV daycare & infant purposes. Here at the Lois Hole Branch Library, they have spaces IV little kids to play & relax. Little computer stations and reading areas and such. But what the staff has told me is that at this branch and at many others, if a child is acting up, or if a baby is say teething but doesn't need a diaper change in their fine "family friendly" bathrooms (with change stations in both men's and women's washrooms), they will divert the parent &/or guardian with the child/infant over to one of their quiet study rooms.

In this area, with the door closed and not having other kids or possibly noisy disturbances around, the child/infant will finish acting up & then feel the urge II be quiet as they are then not tempted by noise factors. That little bit of extra calming influence can do a great deal of wonder not just IV the child, but IV the adult as well. Not to mention overstretched library staff & patrons who may have been negatively affected by the noise generated. Which obviously is not really conducive II a safe & appropriately quiet social atmosphere (which is of course standard etiquette IV a library as its a place of contemplation &/or study.) Except of course in cases where kids come in for library field trips/scavenger hunts/craft sessions, etc.

Dear David:

I was talking to some administrators and custodial staffers, as well as parents while campaigning by Lorelei Elementary School on CIIIrd (103rd) Street earlier today. They say that from the time the snow melts and the grass fields are in use, right up until the end of summer, there is an extreme concern about broken bottles and other glass products being stepped on by kids in the area. I think greater volunteer accountability needs to happen. We need II set up volunteer support groups of parents and family members to comb the fields at least once every IV to VI weeks and ensure there are no glass particulates on the ground. Thus ensuring maximum safety IV our students when they take take part in outdoor athletic endeavours. Ie: Baseball, soccer, track & field.

August XXIst, MMX

Hon. David G. Hancock, QC, MLA, Minister of Education, Progressive Conservative, Edmonton-Whitemud

Dear David:

Internet usage rules at the EPL set of branches are more them fair & equitable. One hour per person, per day. With XV (15) minutes II one hour extra per person being allotted at the library staff's discretion in case the client has an emergency or if there are empty terminals not in use.

Its my contention however David that library's should also allow folks to bank up to XV (15) minutes a day extra to be used that day or attached II their one hour allotted time the next day. This of course is only in situations where the library server is slow or if a kid's report isn't able II be printed out on time IV them II go II school. Its not after all a student's fault if a computer fails or outright crashes. So in otherwords bumping each person who is affected up by a bad computer to LXXV (75) minutes II cover IV an event they have no control over.

Dear David:

I am strongly encouraged by the level of newspapers here in the Londonderry Mall EPL. The staffers tell me that any that are X (10) days or older can be chopped up by kids doing crafts &/or school projects. Its not the same of course at every branch library in the city system. But I realize what Londonderry EPL staff are doing is getting kids II focus on reading & analyzing about current events from newspapers & periodicals. This takes away the kids from too much surfing & game playing on the internet. Londonderry EPL staff are doing is encouraging kids & EPL clients to read & learn from things on paper to develop their minds & cognitive/oratorical functions. I strongly encourage this practice!

As I take a little late lunch here in the mall from campaigning, I noticed what an unbelievable Science Fiction section the Londonderry EPL has. Frankly, its quite staggering & huge not just in size, but in scope. The attendants and a couple of folks here on the study computers tell me how great the library staff are in getting folks specialty titles ordered in. They are so good they will even call bookstores (both used & new) II help find customers a title if they do not have it in stock & the customer is willing to travel to pay for the item. Which they quite often are. This gentleman named Laurence needed an out of date Star Trek novel to complete the last of a five part book series. Londonderry EPL staff got him a copy at the Whyte Avenue Wee Book Inn. He was thrilled & gushed about the service. He travelled there by bus and only had to pay $4.00 for a $31.00 book. Now I must say that is stellar service.

I would also state of & IV the record that full body X-rays need II be done at the government's expense each & every time the child(en) is/are transferred II a new family. If only II ensure absolute transparency & protect the preceeding family. Just in case false allegatons are levelled by the new foster family, and IV just the general overall health of the child (ren) as they grow.

Dear David:

What an unbelievable set of circumstances has transpired here at this branch. A young man who came inII the library here at Highlands was doing a research project on human ears and sinus cavity's. Basically needing some colur pictures of faces, & inner working drawings of the inner ear canal, nasal cavity, & the human heart & lungs. Which of course all aid in the conduction of breathing.

Now I had been in the libary for about XIV (14) minutes, so I of course was next in the rotation II wait for an open computer. So I told the young man because he was doing the project IV summer school, I would let him go on the computer first. Even though it was clearly Ist come, Ist serve. I was teaching him about respect & order. All I asked of him was that he gave up his computer before his time was up at another juncture or timeframe II another person in need. Basically II "pay it forward."

This young lad, a Sikh named Balthazaar promised he would. A few minutes later, he got the next computer & I am sitting directly across from him and his mother now. A young lady with a child came in looking quite distressed came in looking IV directions to a health clinic. Well by goodness if Balthazaar didn't just offer up about XI (11) to XIII (13) minutes of his own computer time as he could she she needed it. I told his mother I was proud of him & what a great guy he was for helping this young lady. The Highlands EPL staff were so impressed they gave him an extra XX (20) minutes towards his internet time so he could get the right pictures he needed so his breathing/circulation project would net him an excellent grade.

A Young Man Of Quality,

Rory

Dear David:

Coach Greg Olson is great example. He lets his players on the East Park Orioles Little League Baseball team evolve. He inspires his players who are in the XV II XVII (15 to 17) age range to excel. Having confidence in themseves by an adult mentor makes kids like Peter Quenneville & Taylor Thomas feel that they could be coaches/leaders one day themselves. This is definitely a coach that these Little League players should look up to as an athletic educational example of pride, strength, & dignity.

Dear David:

Take a look at Double Academy Award (TM) Winner Sylvester Stallone will ya. The man is LXIV (64) years old and still cranking out action movies. Including starring, writing, producing, & directing his latest action flick: "The Expendables." Co-starring with him are Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and many other famous MCMLXX's (1970's) II now (circa) action stars.

Seeing these great tough guys altogether in one film just proves my point. Just because you are a senior citizen, doesn't mean you aren't tough enough II perform your own stunts, as Stallone & other cast members did. When someI is a senior, treat them with respect & honour. These men had the courage II perform & excel in action. If they can keep doing so, then let them continue to be the best at it! Seniors are just as tough as many folks half their age, if not more. Hey, ask Sylvester Stallone if I am wrong.

He'll Give Ya An Education Adrian,

Dear David:

You should read the book called: "Love In A Time Of Homeschooling." Important Points Include:

I. Becoming a homeschool teacher to daughter who was having trouble & outright problems adjusting academically.

II. Student/Parent Teacher was thankful that mother instilled in her that most of her learning comes from doing, not necessarily from regular public education. With the proviso that "regular public education" is also not any better or worse (just a different format.)

III. Learning "hands on" can inspire students to work even harder academically: to in fact outright excel!

Dear David:

I am going II have II agree strongly with the administrative official who stated that having II lay off 65,000 plus teachers across the Province & then hire them all back effective August XXVIIth, MMX was a boneheaded move. If the Province knew that they were going II be able II squeeze a few million more out of Finance, then why in the hell leave Trustees with the shaft & force the laying off of teachers. Especially bad IV good Trustees who are facing an election writ year Provincewide.

David, what you should have done is stick with long term contracts instead of trying to be chinty & save a few bucks. Long term contracts are always cheaper in the end then short term, poorly planned term appointments that force teachers and other administrative staff II live hand II mouth. Kids need stability David & they are not getting it with this clearly educational abuse of human resource(s) authority.

Dear David;

I just want II say that I wish the children of St. Catherine's School as they enter Week II of their year round school experiment. Edmonton Catholic School District was right to try this experiment out. Right and brave. No extra school hours, but intermittent, shorter breaks throughout the school year II give kids a better chance at higher academic standards by being in a class setting year round.

From the reports I have seen in newspapers and on television, the kids seem happy and healthy. As well as excited about the different style and pace of learning. As well as adapting to new challenges and meeting new friends and strengthening bonds with old friends, as well as their teachers & support staff. I believe this pilot project will be very strong in terms of academic results yielded and increasing overall childhood cognitive function(s.) Lets hope IV the best and these year round students become educational superstars!

Dear David:

I arrived at the Financial Bvilding this morning about 08:35AM MDT to challenge the Biology XXX (30) Exam & was chatting with a couple of students in the Lobby & outside the Exam Room in the Foyer of the VIIIth (8th) floor. They were telling me that they agreed with me that the Written Response should be returned II all science based & mathematical based exams. That the strictly Numerical Response/Multiple Choice exams were not fair. I agreed & pointed out to them and some of the teachers/exam administrators walking by that in real life, mathematical & science based career students would have II solve problems in a long form format. For instance in technical schools, colleges, & university's: students in these classes are given this type of problem by their Instructor/Professor all the time. So its just simple logic to return the exams II a partially Written Response format.

In my opinion David, you cannot as I have said put a price on education & if Minister of Finance Theodore (Ted) Morton has II shovel a few million dollars more over II Alberta Education to ensure that the exams are as fair (& challenging/stimulating) as possible to each student's mind/olifactory senses, then so be it. You put a test from MMII (2002) on the internet IV Applied Math XXX (30) for students II study with a Written Response section, students study IV that section & yet do not have II face it on the respective exam day, IV Applied Math or any Science subject? How is this reasonable or even ethical? That exam is VIII years old, clearly in MMX (2010) its outdated & outmoded. Actually, its a case of staggering bureaucratic incompetence & underlings who are trying II cheapen the value of education IV our Alberta students.

I agree that passing level differentiation with Written Response & without has been negligible. But I have taken the extraordinary step of actually filing formal complaints about this matter with the Transcription Unit, CSP Help Desk & your cabinet & constituency offices. II further emphasize my disagreement with your Department's decision, I have written complaints right into the Exam Challenge Booklets themselves & their Official Tear Sheets. Kids need II write & cojutate, not just blindly throw in numbers & letters on course exam errata sheets. We can't figure out who is truly the best of our students and who needs more teaching assistance without written questions & responses!

Graciously,

Rory

Dear David:

A sincere laudit or set of laudits must be given to People's Choice (TM) & Golden Globe Winner (TM) Tony Danza, Actor. He gave up a year of his life & moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where there is a teaching shortage. Under the supervision there at Northeast School (the City of Brotherly Love's largest), he used his Bachelor of History to go in and instruct Grade X (10) English classes. Truly a remarkable thing to do, and the fact by living on strictly a teacher's salary & taking no wages from the Arts & Entertainment (A&E) Network for the series (beyond expenses) he really took quite a pay hit.

I would strongly encourage students & their parents to watch this series when it debuts on A&E on October Ist, MMX. "Teach" the series definitely looks like a winner & Mr. Danza was very adept in deciding to do this when he had more lucrative stage offers on Broadway & Las Vegas. This will help him raise his profile & acting career options. More importantly, it will raise the profile of how important public education really is!

In gorgeous and palatially sunny Miami, Florida; XIII (13) year old Tae Tae Davis, a Grade VIII (8) student saw a need to help er classmates and homeless kids when her public school's art budget was cut. Dear David:

Having just written the exam challenge for Applied Mathematics XXX (30) this morning at the Financial Building David, I must say the quality & professionalism of the teachers & administrators there and at the Transcription Unit where I paid my fee is outstanding, beyond reproach really. But I am a little mad because three times I phoned Transcription Unit beIV coming down in the last II weeks and this morning I was in the Financial Building on 107 Street & was told by both I had to pay at Capital Boulevard two blocks over and half a block up. When I got to the Transcription Unit, they told me they had been mistaken & that I could have paid in the Examination Room after all & that the exams were in the Financial Building after all (as they are every August session.)

This not only served II waste my time, it shows how incompetent bureaucrats can at times be. I know they are under stress, but why in the hell tell me that the exams are going to be in one building when in fact they are located in their usual place?! I am angry because I had II walk all the way back II the Financial Building, give the administrator hell IV screwing me over & then show my receipt & ID. As a result, I didn't get started until 09:06AM MDT & so if I needed the full 2.5 hours, then I should be allowed to end at 11:36AM MDT & not at the stated required end time of 11:32AM MDT. To say I was unsatisfied would be an understatement David.

Dear David:

There is too much negativity going around these days. When kids are feeling down in schools, I say it their friends, teachers, or staffers give them a hug! Hugs can be a confidence booster & a real shot in the arm IV kids who might be sad about their performance in say a school play, musical act, or just in general academically.

A hug lets these kids know that there is a support system in place II cheer them on & give them the energy & drive they need to get better. Not just better, but to outright excel. Touching & hugging can jack up your oxycontin levels of hormone, which will reduce the overall anxiety/tension in a student's life.

That poor little XI (11) year old boy (Muhammad Aashar Mahmood) in Golden, British Columbia. I cannot imagine how fast he will have II grow up. Seeing his grandfather, father, mother, two sisters, & best friend die beIV his eyes. Now having II stand bravely at a funeral with six coffins and bury them. Its just not fair. These fine folks were a great addition to Canada: hard working, Pakistani immigrants.

From what I understand, concrete barriers are going II be put up on that stretch of road to prevent people from meandering from one side II another. Sadly, there were not even painted lines on the road II separate the lanes from one another & providing some measure of safety.

I sure hope Muhammad has some measure of peace that his family are not suffering.
